LOST AND FOUND

Feeling lost, although unpleasant, is often a good sign. It's the moment when things start shifting and the momentum for a change is growing. When you miss the leap towards materializing what you think you’re meant to be doing in your life, you find yourself in a perpetual limbo. There are times in life when we lose our direction.

This is what I went through this year with my life as an artist. But I persevered and created this wonderful series.

I start each piece by painting the colours on the canvas randomly without any idea what I am going to paint on it. Then I sit in front of it and respond to what I see to start painting a figure. Because I love painting faces and hands, I then work on these. As a whole, I leave out sections of the figure as the viewer would already know where everything goes. This stage I love cos it brings the figure alive. I continue by putting a few more details, such as parts of the clothing, arms, neck, hair and feet. I then work on tones, light and dark in the entire painting to make the figure work with the background so the painting works as a whole.

The theme of this series is exploring the narrative we are given in life. We create a spontaneous environment that envelopes our sense of being. The being that emerges (like it does in my paintings) kind of mid-way in a sentence.

I was once lost at some point in my journey as an artist and for now have been found. It is okay to sometimes feel lost in our lives as it means something better is waiting for us and all the feelings arise to show us something more about ourselves.
